Sokratis Famellos, President of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance

 

Personal Info

He was born in Athens in 1966, but grew up and lived in Thessaloniki since 1970. Married twice, to Popi Karagiannidou (departed at 2018) and to Tatiana Papadopoulou at 2024. He has a son from his first marriage, Petros, Mechanical Engineer from AUTH, MSC in aerospace from Georgia Tech, Atlanta, USA.

 

Professional and Academic Career

He holds a Diploma (M.Eng) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki on Chemical Engineering and a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Environmental Design from the Hellenic Open University.

 

Parliamentary Career

In January 2015, he was elected for the first time as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament for SYRIZA. He has been re-elected in the national elections held in September 2015, July 2019 and June 2023.

In November 2016, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy until the July 2019 election.

In August 2019, he was appointed Head of the SYRIZA Environment and Energy Department, until July 2023.

He was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in the period 2019-2022.

In July 2023, he was elected President of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA-P.S.

In the party elections of November 24, 2024, he was elected President of SYRIZA-P.S.

 

Involvement in national and local politics

Municipal Councilor of Thermi from 2006 to 2015.

Chairman of Municipal Enterprises, 2003-2012.

Deputy Mayor, 2013.

Member of the Executive Committee and the Board of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Macedonia, 2014-2015.

Member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Solid Waste Management Agency of Central Macedonia, 2011-2014.

 

Trade Union Activities

Elected to the Panhellenic Delegation (Assembly) of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) (2003-2015).

Elected to the Assembly of the Technical Chamber, Dept of Central Macedonia (TEE/TKM) (1997- 2015).

Served as: President of the Delegation (Assembly), (2003-2006), Member of the Board (1997-2001).

President of the Environment Committee, member of the Boards of the Panhellenic Association of Chemical Engineers.

 

Scientific Activities

Environmental Engineering and Projects, Water Resources Management, Recycling, Liquid and Solid Waste Management, Regional Development, Renewable Energy Sources.

Development Director of the Development Company of Local Authorities of Eastern Thessaloniki, ANATOLIKI SA (2001-2013) and Head of environmental projects (1995-2001).
